Good Emporium was born first as an idea for a campaign called Year of the Planet.
We thought “wouldn’t it be good to have a campaign in 2020 where everyone could pledge to make one small change each month in their lives to live more sustainably.”
We could share lots of stories about why that thing is important, and how people might go about making the change, and everyone could share their stories, and that would encourage more people to join and make the changes, and together we could all help reduce carbon emissions, landfill waste and ocean-bound plastics.
And then we thought “I guess we’ll need to build an online store that finds and shares beautiful things made by good people to help us all live a little more sustainably”...
And so Good Emporium was born.
Zero carbon, zero waste
We wanted Good Emporium to also be zero carbon, zero waste. We didn’t want to add to the problem.
But that’s not easy, as we have discovered.
We started by partnering with Sendle for deliveries. They offer carbon neutral deliveries, by offsetting the carbon emissions produced by your delivery, through their partnership with the South Pole group.
Not as good as carbon zero delivery (eg: bikes and electric cars), but it’s a start.
We also shred all the packaging that our products come in, and use that as filler. You can then use that filler for compost, which is better than recycling.
Our own boxes are made from 100% recycled paper, and we don’t use any plastics in any of our packaging.
Our cards are lovely seed cards from Nurturing Nature, so you can plant them and grow things.
We’ve got a long way to go, and we’ll keep learning.
If you have an idea to help us reduce our carbon and waste, please let us know!
The Good Empire
Good Emporium is the first startup from Good Empire, which is an incubator of startups and projects for good.
For good as in for the good of the world, not just ourselves.
For good as in long term good, not just good for now.
We bring ideas that are good for the world to life.
What started as a small team of people driven to change things in our culture that need to change, is growing into a big, beautiful tribe of good people and good businesses.
Before starting Good Empire, our founder, André Eikmeier, co-founded online wine store Vinomofo.
“When I first had the idea for Good Empire, I wrote down this as my business plan:
“Gather a small group of good-hearted, fiercely passionate people who are good at what they do, and genuinely want to change the world.
“I didn’t have more of a plan than that, but I knew I desperately wanted to be part of something that was important, something that aligned with my own purpose, and be surrounded by good people.
“I didn’t want scale, I didn’t think in terms of revenue or how big the company would grow. I just wanted to be able to change things that I felt needed changing.”
