You don’t know crisis of conscience until you have looked into your twelve-year-old daughter’s big blue eyes and told her she can’t order bubble tea on Uber eats.
I’m quite susceptible to those big blue eyes, but I just couldn’t condone it anymore.
Ignoring the carbon abuse of driving a drink five kilometres for a moment, with all the plastic in all the world, that big fat plastic straw that comes punched through the top of the plastic lid of the giant plastic cup filled with jelly squares and sugarjuice is the proverbial that broke the camel’s back.
I don’t know about you, but I find it hard to believe that in Australia alone we use and discard 10 million plastic straws A DAY. Up that to a cool billion around the world. Every day. Surely not.
But sadly so.
And these three hundred billion straws end up in our oceans, waterways and landfills.
Enter Jamie-Lee and Lennart and TheOtherStraw, and may we all bow the f##k down in admiration and gratitude.
They’ve made these beautiful reuseable organic bamboo straws, with little cleaning brushes made from natural coconut fibres, in lovely little sustainable cotton bags.
Even lovelier - they don’t just order them on Alibaba, they work with local communities in northern Vietnam to design, grow and harvest their straws, and they make sure everyone involved gets a fair wage and decent working conditions.
And putting aside the fact that they’re young and in love and will make quite attractive babies if they ever take a break from saving the world long enough to carve out some private couple time, they also give back 50% of their profits to ocean clean-up projects.
This is the stuff that we started Good Emporium for.
We all need some bamboo straws in the cutlery drawer, so we can hold them up high with hope in our hearts and a nervous but convicted smile as we offer to make our twelve-year-old daughters their very own special home-made iced tea in a big tall glass with chopped up jelly babies.
We all need to keep a two-pack of bamboo straws in our bag so that when we’re ordering our early morning smoothie or a late-morning G+T we can nicely but firmly whip one out and tell the nineteen year old with the fake lashes...
“Oh - and I don’t need a plastic straw, thanks, save the planet, I have my own, and it’s made from bamboo, which by the way is one of the most sustainable growing plants in the world, and absorbs carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases and releases up to 35% more oxygen than trees, and yes, we’re sitting at table 12 outside in the sun, because it’s a beautiful day.”
